Video game controllers are something we use every day, but how do they work? The engineers first have to design the controller. Doing this could take months. After that, the engineers have a plastic shell molded to their design. The engineers also make a small circuit board and put it inside the shell. The buttons are straightforward. They work by running a current through two small pieces of metal, and when they touch, the electricity passes through giving a signal.
Joysticks are similar in the fact that they use a current for their signal. They have 4 resistors placed at 90-degree angles. The current is constantly flowing through the resistors, and it changes when you rotate the joystick. Though you may find wired controllers on old consoles, most controllers now are wireless. This can be made using wireless signals like Bluetooth.
So that’s how video game controllers work. Pretty cool right?
