The Roman Army was the most powerful in the continent because of their ranking structure and most importantly, their engineered wonders. Thanks to their engineering expertise, many of their millitary campaigns were crushing successes! The Roman’s innovative weaponry was a key piece in their army, letting them enhance their defences and also better attack an enemy. Every leigion had a squad of fabri, or engineers in charge of building weapons and setting up the encampments for the army. These encampments were well known of and could be erected in just three hours allowing troops to have a mobile base that was easy to protect. Other incredible evidence of Roman millitary engineering were two siege weapons, the Ballista and the Scorpio, these weapons were designs copied and improved upon from other armies for greater accuracy and range. The Ballista looked like a giant crossbow while the Scorpio resembled a hybrid between the earlier and a catapult, both weapons shot giant projectiles that looked like arrows called bolts. The Scorpio was employed as field artillery and could hit a target from 100 meters away, while the Ballista was used to hit larger targets like castle walls. All in all the Roman army was one of the most powerful at its time and this was not only because of their brilliant stratagems and leaders, but also because of their remarkable inventions.
