In the world of high-end PC gaming, there are only 3 GPUs that come to mind. AMD’s RX 7900 XTX, and Nvidia’s RTX 4080 and RTX 4090. All three of these GPUs will provide an amazing and satisfying performance no matter which card you choose. Today we will be comparing the RTX 4080 and the RX 7900 XTX as they are closer in price. But remember that if you want the cream of the crop and you have deep pockets, the RTX 4090 is the clear winner.

What is a Graphics Card?

A graphics card is the component in PCs and some high-end laptops that is responsible for the graphical output. It is also commonly referred to as the GPU. In every custom PC, the graphics card is the most expensive component. V-RAM stands for Video Random Access Memory, which is like the RAM for your PC but for the GPU. The more V-RAM the more capability the graphics card has.

AMD Radeon 7900 XTX

AMD has always been lagging behind Nvidia as back then they simply made better cards, but that was then and this is now, and AMD’s 7900 XTX is nothing to disregard and has a lot to bring to the table. Specifically, the Radeon 7900 XTX. The 7900 XTX is the highest end of GPUs for AMD, coming in at $999. Only one hundred dollars more than the base 7900xt, which is significantly slower than the 7900 XTX. The 7900 XTX has 24 GB of GDDR6 V-RAM and a game frequency of 2300 MHz, and a boost frequency of 2500MHz. On GPU benchmark the 7900 XTX has around 60% more “nice to haves.” The RX 7900 XTX has a TDP of 355W, which is a lot of power for one component, but if you have one grand to drop on a graphics card then I would expect that you will have no problem paying a few more dollars in power.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080

Nvidia is the king of GPUs, with its stock going for $903.63 per share as of April of 2024. The RTX 4080 is a second-place GPU coming right behind the RTX 4090. But the 4080 is not cheap either, going around $1,199 for the cheapest 4080(200 dollars more than the 7900 XTX). So, can it justify the extra $200? Well I believe that it depends on the game. The 4080 has 16 GB of GDDR6X V-RAM, which is a faster kind of V-RAM than the 7900 XTX’s GDDR6 V-RAM. The 4080 has a 2205 MHz game frequency and a 2505 boost frequency, which has a lower game frequency than the 7900 XTX but a tiny bit faster boost frequency. On GPU benchmark the 4080 scores a 14 percent higher score than the 7900 XTX, along with a faster overclock score. The 4080 has a slightly lower wattage than the 7900 XTX with a TDP of 320W, which will be cheaper overall. In terms of drivers, Nvidia’s drivers are stable and safe, while AMD’s RDNA3 drivers may have more problems and will be harder to manage.

Ray Tracing and Upscaling

If you know anything about Nvidia I guarantee you know that Nvidia has the crispiest and smoothest ray tracing in the industry. While AMD’s ray tracing is at most forgettable. So clearly Nvidia wins this battle. However, upscaling might be a different story. DLSS3 is Nvidia’s upscaling, and FSR3 is AMD’s. DLSS3 is higher quality and provides better performance optimization and image quality, while AMD’s FSR3 is a bit slower but is more widely available. Which makes a tie in the upscaling department.

The Final Verdict

Both graphics cards are packed with powers and features that you will not be regretting spending $1000 or more on. But which GPU is right for you? The 7900 XTX is best for people who want that raw FPS and price for performance, as the 7900 XTX performs better in 1440p rather than 4k. Which makes it perfect for professional gamers, or people that sweat their favorite game. The RTX 4080 on the other hand is two hundred dollars more, but is better in graphically intense games, such as Cyber Punk and Star Field in 4k. However, you can also decide for yourself what is better for you. But whichever GPU you buy I guarantee that you will have zero regrets.
