Le Mans racing was started in 1923.  Le Mans is the name of the town in France that hosts the race–sometimes known as the .   on the Circuit de la Sarthe, sometimes known as “The 24-Hour Circuit of Le Mans.”  It takes place on public roads and is 8.46-mile loop.

The premise of the racing originally was having the drivers run to their cars, start them and drive off.

Two of the main brands that raced were Porsche and Ferrari. Fiat also made some cars, as well as Alpine, Ford, McLaren, and Audi.

Some of the greatest most legendary cars have competed in the Le Man’s race.  The 1961 Ford GT, produced by Shelby was known for the horsepower of its 7-liter, 427-cubic-inch engine.

But the GT40 wasn’t the only great car.  There was also the 1988 WM Peugeot P88, Mazda 787B, 1967 Ferrari 330 p4, 991 Peugeot 905, 1982 Porsche 956, 1995 McLaren  F1 GTR, 2013 Audi R18, and 1970 Porsche 917.

These cars were the fastest 24-hour cars of the time.
