Penguins are Getting Custom Eye Lenses and Receiving Eye Surgery

Three penguins revive cataract surgery

For the first time ever, penguins successfully went through cataract surgery. This happened two weeks ago in Singapore with three King Penguins and three Humboldt Penguins. This surgery is needed when you have cloudy eye lenses because of cataracts.

Transportation of these animals had to be perfect as temperatures needed to be artic like 24/7. To accomplish this, the penguins were sat in ice water buckets and heavily air conditioned space while being transported.

Dr. Gladys Boo was asked by the Mandai Wildlife Group to check up on a colony of penguins. In result, Dr. Boo found that 6 of them had cataracts. After this, Dr. Boo and a veterinary team from MWG, worked to get the surgery done. The penguins got custom artificial eye lenses to replace the foggy ones. The doctors say the size of King and Humboldt Penguins  made the surgery easier.

The lenses were created specifically for each penguin’s eye in Germany and required two months to develop. The surgery, which is a delicate process in and of itself, proved more difficult for penguins because of their distinctive features, such as a third eyelid that protects their eyes underwater.
