The Insight

The+InSight

The InSight is a lander that was designed to land on Mars. InSight stands for Interior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport. The InSight has several main missions. One mission is to put a seismometer, or a SEIS, on the surface of Mars to measure earthquakes and tremors. Another mission is to create an accurate 3D model of the inside of the planet. The third mission is to study and measure the interior heat flow using HP3, or the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package. The InSight’s long term goal is to to study Mars’ early geological evolution.

The InSight was originally going to be called GEMS (Geophysical Monitoring Station), but it’s name was changed in early 2012. The Insight was launched in May of 2018, and it’s progress has been recorded since.

This relates to engineering, because the InSight had to be manufactured, and many engineers were hired to help build it. The InSight was planed out and eventually built.
