Scientists work on artificial embryos.

Embryologists at the University of Cambridge have grown mouse embryos using only stem cells. This is a major breakthrough because no gametes, or sex cells, were used to grow these embryos. Even though a mouse probably would not have grown from this embryo, this experiment is an indication of the power of the stem cell’s ability to organize themselves. Eventually, it is possible that an organism can be created without involving any gametes.

This relates to engineering because it shows how engineering can be applied to the life sciences. The researchers in this scenario engineered stem cells to create life.
