NASA has successfully grown edible plants and food in space for the first time using a new device called Veggie. The experiment was created so that astronauts could grow fresher and tastier vegetables, like tomatoes.
It is important for scientists and astronauts to be able to grow plants that can be maintained for a long period of time. This will allow them to go on longer ventures and discover more in space. And it will also make the trip more enjoyable.
However to make sure that tomatoes were able to withstand space scientists decided to test it out using a different plant called zinnias.
After mold infested the plants scientists and astronauts had to problem solve in order to find a way to get rid of the mold.
This relates to engineering because a new device was created and an experiment was conducted to test out a way to improve life in space.
