The Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funded a project to help people recover their memories. They developed a “prosthetic memory” implant that can improve someone’s memory by an average of 35%. The goal of the study is to help people with memory loss or Alzheimer’s. There are still continuing trials taking place.

The studies in how technology can improve memory loss connects older and disabled citizens to engineering. The engineering that went in to designing and making the implant will be able to cure or treat different disabilities in different people. The patients that did the study have been able to have a better memory and live more normal lives.
Electrical engineers had to work on this project in order to code and design a system that is capable of activating the hippocampus (where memories and emotions are stored in the brain). These engineers would’ve had to work with brain surgeons and doctors to find a safe way to implant such a chip to the brain.
