One of Paris’ greatest attractions, the Eiffel Tower, was the tallest building in the world for many years after it was built. The tower itself was built from 2.5 million rivets, 15,000 iron pieces (excluding the rivets), and took 40 tons of paint. The tower took 300 workers 2 years to build. It is very light for its size, 7300 metric tons, and is 1069 feet high. It was completed in 1899 for the Paris World’s Fair. It was designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, a French engineer who specialized in metallic structures. It was almost torn down many times, but it was decided to continue to let it stand in Paris.
This relates to engineering, because when it was created, and even today, there has never been another building like it. It has an ingenious design and has attracted over 250 million tourists since it was built, about 7 million people each year now. Its unique design allows it to stand, even after 119 years.
