If you ask any person that smokes weed they’ll tell you about the wonders of weed. From the stress relief to the enhanced appreciation of pizza. Turns out they were on to something all along, some compounds responsible for weeds smell actually offer some strong pain relief. According to the University of Arizona health and sciences, some terpenes found in cannabis sativa could be effective for treating chronic pain like fibromyalgia and relief pain after surgery. Terpenes are the smelly stuff in cannabis and other plants that make them smell like citrus, pine, or even skunk. But they might do more than just smell nice they could help with pain. Scientists tested four terpenes on mice to see if they could help with pain from fibromyalgia and surgery. One terpene, geraniol, worked the best at reducing pain. The lead scientist, Dr. John Streicher, said terpenes don’t really help with quick pain, like stubbing your toe, but they might be really good for long term pain. Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects up to 5% of people worldwide, causing pain, tiredness, and trouble thinking. There aren’t many good treatments, but scientists think cannabis terpenes might help. Terpenes could be a good option for people who don’t want regular pain medicine. Unlike THC, they don’t make you feel high.
