Father’s Day is the time to appreciate all the things that our Father’s have worked and spent time on and sacrificed to give their children a better life. On this day, we celebrate and honor all our Dads, including brothers, grandfathers, husbands, and any father figure in a family! Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of every June every year in America. On Father’s Day, we can surprise our Dads with gifts, cards, and most importantly, spending time with them.

It wasn’t until 1972 when Father’s Day officially became a national holiday in the US. It’s been over fifty years since it was declared by the thirty-seventh president of the US, Richard Nixon. Surprisingly, there was a little bit of controversy in the idea of Father’s Day and it was not immediately accepted after the idea was proposed. Mother’s Day actually came first by fifty-eight years!

There were some Americans that were not in favor of Father’s Day because they thought the idea of Father’s Day was just to get people to buy products. Most of congress had adapted the idea that Father’s Day was a fake, which is why it was pushed back for so many years.

Father’s Day finally started to gain Americans’ attention, and popularity after World War 2. World War 2 was able to open the publics’ eye. Americans started to realize how much the Dads in our lives were willing to sacrifice for us. Over 180,000 American children lost their fathers in World War 2 which left so many families with just one parent.

In 1956, the US Congress had finally started to acknowledge Father’s Day. However, congress never took action until over a decade later, where president Richard Nixon officially established it as a national holiday.

Now Father’s Day is recognized as one of America’s most celebrated holidays and now over seventy countries worldwide celebrate it on the third Sunday of every June!
