A plant scientist at Iowa State University developed very cheap sensors on tape that can be attached to plants to measure the time it takes for two kinds of corn plants to move water from their roots, to their lower leaves and then to their upper leaves. He says that it could help them breed plants more efficient in water usage.

The device is a tiny little graphene sensor that can be attached to plant like a tattoo, which is why scientists named it a “plant tattoo sensor.” Graphene is a carbon honeycomb and atom thick, which is good for conducting heat and electricity.
