NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is currently developing the Automation Rover for Extreme Environments (AREE). The AREE is a technology involving mechanical computing as opposed to electronic computing. Electronic computing is virtually useless in inhospitable environments such as Venus. The pressure on Venus is able to crush most submarines and the temperature would melt lead, let alone copper wiring. These challenges have made exploring Venus very hard in the past. No rover has ever lasted more than a few hours on the planet. By using mechanical computing, the same way that Charles Babbage’s Difference Machine did, there is a chance of surviving for up to a year. “The Automaton Rover for Extreme Environments (AREE) [sic] is funded for study by the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program.”
