How Maglev Trains Work

How+Maglev+Trains+Work

Trains are evolving like every other technology. The latest is the Maglev system. These trains reach the highest speeds in train industry, about 431 km/h (268 mph)! Here is how it works.

If you’ve ever played with magnets, you know that opposite poles attract and same poles repel each other. This is the basic principle behind electromagnetic propulsion. Electromagnets are similar to other magnets in that they attract metal objects, but the magnetic pull is temporary. Maglevs basically use the repelsion property to float, and both attraction and repelsion to move. This crosses out friction, which limits how fast ordinary trains can go.

Maglev trains are related to engineering, because engineers design and make trains. They are responsible for coming out with new ideas on improving the old and obselete technology to new, efficient and better products.
